Lea Basile-Lazarus

Lea Basile-Lazarus

A Little Bit About Lea Basile-Lazarus…….

“I capture moments in time through my paper making processes and through my expressive use of contemporary printmaking techniques. Sometimes my work is literal, but most often, I combine shapes and textures with my unique palette and spontaneous layering processes to create a cohesive, meaningful image that reflects my reactions to the world around me.”

Lea received her BA in Art Education from The College of New Jersey and her MFA, with a concentration in Printmaking, from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She taught art for 28 years, the last 5 years at Beacon Academy, a Montessori high school, in Evanston, Il. In Lea’s teaching career she has been a recipient of a Teacher Fulbright trip to Japan, spending three weeks abroad learning about Japan’s culture, art, and education system. Through a non-profit organization called Do Your P’Art, Lea was sent to Africa to visit Ghanaian schools and villages. Also, through Do Your P’Art, she designed and implemented collaborations with Chicago Public Schools on social justice art projects.

Lea is also a professional artist creating, exhibiting, and selling contemporary prints and paper pulp paintings. She has recently moved from an urban environment, Evanston, Illinois, to a more rural setting, Gig Harbor, Washington.  Her tone has changed. Lea is surrounded by water and greenery that she is in awe of everyday; there is more peace and more solitude in her life. Her current work reflects this major change. Even so, deep concerns still remain about what is happening in our world today. Lea makes art out of the need to react, to express, and to reflect.

Lea’s paper pulp paintings are created at Hook Pottery Paper in La Porte, Indiana.
